But be it so, I did not myself burden you; but, being crafty, I caught you with guile.


But be that as it may, I did not burden you [with my support]. But [some say that] I was sly and took you by trickery.


But though granting that I did not burden you [with my support, some say that] I was crafty [and that] I cheated and got the better of you with my trickery.


And so be it. I have not burdened you, but instead, being astute, I obtained you by guile.


Now granted, I did not burden you; yet sly as I am, I took you in by deceit!


We all know that I didn’t place a burden on you, but in spite of that you think I’m a con artist who fooled you with a trick.


Let it be granted, then, that I was not a burden to you; but, crafty fellow that I am, I took you with trickery!

And why is it that I keep coming across these whiffs of gossip about how my self-support was a front behind which I worked an elaborate scam? Where’s the evidence? Did I cheat or trick you through any


But let the matter of my being a burden on you be as it may, some say, “Crafty jack that I am, I took you by ormah (cunning).”
